Overview of Saltwater Disposal Well Facilities

The production of oil and gas creates the byproduct “saltwater,” also known as “produced water.” For each barrel of oil produced, there can be an average of three to five barrels of saltwater. The saltwater helps bring oil and gas to the earth’s surface during production and must later be safely discarded.

One method of safely managing this water is an eco-friendly, EPA-approved saltwater disposal well facility. The Environmental Protection Agency describes a disposal well as a bored or drilled well whose depth is much greater than surface water sources, helping protect land and water resources. Disposal formations are commonly composed of limestone or sandstone, and each state imposes strict regulations on saltwater disposal facilities.
